Black Hawk Elementary
PTO Meeting Minutes for October
9, 2007
Welcome Thank you notes were shared.
Secretary’s Report Minutes from the August 2007 meeting were
approved as written.
Treasurer’s
Report The reports for August and September 2007 were accepted as written.
The budgets for both months were also accepted as written. Accountant report: the
taxes are done and sent in. We are now fully classified as a public charity and tax-exempt entity.
Old Business
Pizza/Ice Cream social: We received 450 reservations and 350 people attended. The
weather was probably a factor. We are waiting for the Schwan’s bill. The parents
at the PTO meeting all enjoyed the evening. It was hot in the gym, but people liked the chance to visit
and they felt very welcomed into the building.
Picture Day: Susan
Price helped with the classes.
UNI concession stand: Kristi
reported that they kept busy on Aug. 30th, and made about $295 for the school. There will be
another group for Homecoming, Oct. 13th
New Business
We discussed the question of a new shirt design. Amy McGovern will check with the parents who volunteered
to look into a new design.
The fundraiser is going well.
Over 7700 chocolate bars have been sold. The Cedar Falls Wal-Mart is giving us $500 in matching
money. Kristi is in negotiations with the Waterloo Wal-Mart.
The profit from the Reader’s Digest project was $725 for returning 145 coupon books.
Skating Party: the Boy Scouts will be joining Black
Hawk families at the skating party on Oct. 29 from 6:30-8:30.
Scholastic
Book Fair chairs are still needed.
Principal’s Report
Melinda reported on the recent US Supreme Court
case, which struck down using race as a primary factor in assigning students to buildings. This decision
will probably impact both the Iowa open enrollment law as well at the voluntary transfer program in Waterloo.
Until the District has a better understanding of the implications of the ruling on our boundaries and practices any
decisions about remodeling/rebuilding are on hold. The superintendent hopes to have more information for
us by Nov. 1st.
Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM. Next
meeting is Nov. 13 at 6:30; Dr. Jones is tentatively scheduled to speak about building and boundary issues.
Our thanks
to Brenda Felts, Black Hawk associate, for providing childcare at our PTO meetings.
