PTO Meeting Minutes for April 8, 2008

Welcome  Thank you notes were shared.

Secretary’s Report Minutes from the February 2008 meeting were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report The reports for February and March 2008 were accepted as written.  Our current budget was also accepted as written.  Our checkbook balance as of 3-31-08 was $9188.13.  Approved adding a $1000 Parent Involvement line item in 2008-09.

Old Business

Memory Book: Pages were due to Lifetouch on March 24.  Barb Patchin and Lori Lee completed the book with tributes to Mirsada and Mrs. Kelling

YMCA Family Night: 60 students and parents attended

Spring Picture Day: Susan Price had everything under control from 9:00-11:30.  Offering 5 different poises was too much for an elementary school

Skating Party: 120 skaters for a profit of $60

Scholastic Book Fair: Sold $2400 in books resulting in each full time teacher receiving $70 in free books.  Tricia Leininger was assisted by Heather Anderson who will chair the event next year.

New Business

Board of Directors for 2008-09: Tom Nass and Tricia Leininger, co-president; Melinda Ostergren, secretary; Kristi Simmerman, treasurer; and Dwayne Price, assistant treasurer.

Chuck E. Cheese Night June 5: Kristi will get Chuck E. to visit school during the 12:00 dismissal with 10% of profit that evening going to Black Hawk

Staff Breakfast June 6: Jennifer Matlock will provide breakfast at 8:30 a.m. for staff

Fundraiser 2008-09: Kristi agreed to chair selling World’s Finest Chocolate Bars at Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee just like 2007-08; will do the Reader’s Digest magazine/coupon program once again; will work with a new representative, Jeff, from Waverly on both projects; will also do UNI Concessions coordinated by Kristi; may consider some smaller one-time events if time permits

Fun Fair: Fine-tuned raffle (Tom), food (Tricia), games (Tom), and volunteers (grade level volunteers); Kristi will purchase tickets for ticket booths.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.  Next meeting is May 13, 2008, to wrap-up the school year.

Our thanks to Brenda Felts, former Black Hawk associate, for providing childcare at our PTO meetings.

PTO Meeting Minutes for October 9, 2007

Welcome  Thank you notes were shared.

Secretary’s Report Minutes from the August 2007 meeting were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report The reports for August and September 2007 were accepted as written.  The budgets for both months were also accepted as written.  Accountant report:  the taxes are done and sent in.  We are now fully classified as a public charity and tax-exempt entity.

Old Business

Pizza/Ice Cream social:  We received 450 reservations and 350 people attended.  The weather was probably a factor.  We are waiting for the Schwan’s bill.  The parents at the PTO meeting all enjoyed the evening.  It was hot in the gym, but people liked the chance to visit and they felt very welcomed into the building.

Picture Day:  Susan Price helped with the classes.

UNI concession stand:  Kristi reported that they kept busy on Aug. 30th, and made about $295 for the school.  There will be another group for Homecoming, Oct. 13th

New Business

We discussed the question of a new shirt design.  Amy McGovern will check with the parents who volunteered to look into a new design.

The fundraiser is going well.  Over 7700 chocolate bars have been sold.  The Cedar Falls Wal-Mart is giving us $500 in matching money.  Kristi is in negotiations with the Waterloo Wal-Mart.

The profit from the Reader’s Digest project was $725 for returning 145 coupon books.

Skating Party:  the Boy Scouts will be joining Black Hawk families at the skating party on Oct. 29 from 6:30-8:30.

Scholastic Book Fair chairs are still needed.

Principal’s Report

Melinda reported on the recent US Supreme Court case, which struck down using race as a primary factor in assigning students to buildings.  This decision will probably impact both the Iowa open enrollment law as well at the voluntary transfer program in Waterloo.  Until the District has a better understanding of the implications of the ruling on our boundaries and practices any decisions about remodeling/rebuilding are on hold.  The superintendent hopes to have more information for us by Nov. 1st.

Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM.  Next meeting is Nov. 13 at 6:30; Dr. Jones is tentatively scheduled to speak about building and boundary issues.

Our thanks to Brenda Felts, Black Hawk associate, for providing childcare at our PTO meetings.

PTO Meeting Minutes for August 14, 2007

Welcome and Introductions Co-Presidents Tom Nass and Tricia Leininger welcomed families and staff to our meeting.  Tom gave an overview of the PTO history, and how Black Hawk PTO is a non-profit organization.

Secretary’s Report Minutes from the May 8, 2007 meeting were approved as written.

All parents are automatically members of PTO.  People who pay dues are also voting members.

The calendar of meetings was shared; we have reduced the number of business meetings.

Treasurer’s Report The final 06-07 budget report was accepted as written.  Kristi Simmerman explained the budget format, the estimated income and expenses for the year and answered questions.  The budget for 2007-08 was approved as written.

New Business  Committee responsibilities were explained and almost all of the committee positions are filled.  Still to be filled are Scholastic Book Fair and Fun Fair positions.

Fall Fundraiser:  Kristi explained our ideas for selling World’s Finest Chocolate.  We have sign-up sheets for teams for both Wal-Marts and the University Ave. Hy-Vee.  Sign-up sheets will be at the staff meeting and at Open House on Aug. 22nd.   Information will also go home in the first newsletter.  In addition, we will do a two day postcard fundraiser later in the fall.

Principal’s Report

The building is in good shape, ready for the students to come back.  Current projections by grade are:

K:  38       1:  31          2: 38         3:  49          4:  46         5:  45

Right now we have only one first grade section; we will gain another teacher after school starts and enrollment is stabilized at other buildings.   We will either have a current teacher involuntarily transferred, or we will hire a new person.  That depends on enrollment numbers at other buildings after school starts.

As part of our Parent Involvement plan we are having our Open House the night before school starts from 4:30 to 6:00.  Children will be able to meet their teachers, put away supplies and find their lockers.  We are also having a welcome back pizza and ice-cream party on September 18th for Black Hawk families.  This party will be paid for by funds from a grant from AEA 267.

Meeting adjourned 7:50 pm, with Tom sharing Mary Kay lipstick, courtesy of his wife, Anne.  The next meeting is October 9th at 6:30 in the Media Center.

Our thanks to Brenda Felts, Black Hawk associate, for providing childcare at our PTO meetings.
